The Summer Girl by Elle Kennedy5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Have you ever tried walking silently in beach grass? You might as well attach a bell around your neck. But if I try to sneak behind them, they’ll hear me. The couple is facing the dark ocean, which means if I attempt to take the beach route back to the party, they’ll see me. My mind has been Mission: Impossible–ing escape routes since The Dumping commenced. But a clean getaway is difficult because they chose to break up in the worst possible location-right where the beach grass thins and the dunes flatten into a stretch of packed sand. No more than ten feet away from them, I’m sitting against a driftwood log, concealed by shadows. ![]() She pauses for a long beat, during which I consider whether I can make a run for it without the couple noticing. The girl’s voice is flat, lined with dry humor. “Is this some weird sort of foreplay? I don’t get it, but, sure, I’m down.” That honor is bestowed upon the guy with the deep, playful voice, who hasn’t caught up to the fact that his dumper is dead serious. Or rather, secondhand embarrassment, because I’m not even the one getting dumped. It’s the only way to avoid this level of embarrassment. We need to go back to the prohibition days, except we outlaw social events instead of alcohol. See, this is why parties should be banned. ![]() “I don’t think we should hook up anymore.” ![]()

Rats saw god book5/13/2023 ![]() When I combine the look with a doo rag, I'm a regular pirate." As with his other novels- Doing Time and Slave Day-Thomas proves his thorough grasp of young adult issues and emotions. With Steve, author Rob Thomas has taken a teenage outsider and given him a funny, intelligent voice: "There are those males who merely fill ear holes with tiny studs hardly big enough to offend a Marine. No matter where the finger of blame ends up pointing, it's a wild ride of self-enlightenment as Steve discovers that not all relationships are permanent, and that some-like the one with his dad-can be mended with a little work. Or it could be because his "heart had been run through frappé, puree, and liquefy on a love blender" by his ex-girlfriend, Wanda "Dub" Varner. ![]() ![]() Maybe it was when he discovered that he really couldn't relate to his father, the Famous Astronaut. ![]() What sounds like a run-of-the-mill writing assignment, however, becomes an excuse for Steve to reflect on the last four years (from Texas freshman to California senior), and figure out where it all went wrong. In order to pass English class and graduate, 18-year-old Steve York has to write a 100- page essay about his life. ![]()

The Escapist by Gabriel Filippi5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Sometimes the alteration is physical, but more often it's buried within. In The Escapist, Filippi proves an old axiom true: no climber returns from a summit the same person as when he began his ascent. From a Taliban attack on a mountainside in northern Pakistan that felled ten of his climbing companions to the deadliest disaster in Everest's history, Filippi has survived again and again.īut sometimes survival comes with a price. In the course of 20 years spent scaling the highest peaks in the world, Filippi has repeatedly cheated death. A close encounter in a childhood swimming pool left him terrified of the depths, but he had no idea that it was the heights of this world that would eventually call him-and threaten his life over and over again. As a young boy growing up in Lac-Mégantic, Gabriel Filippi lived in fear of drowning. ![]()

Shatter me series destroy me5/13/2023 ![]() “What?” The nervous, shaky word escapes my lips too soon. “Tell me,” he says, “that you would not care if she died along with the others.” I want to tell him he’s wrong, but I’m suddenly feeling unsteady, wishing I’d eaten more at breakfast, and then wishing I’d eaten nothing at all. You think you’re very clever,” he says, “but you’re forgetting who taught you your tricks.” You’re breathing too fast, and your entire body is tense.” A pause. “Your face is pale, your only working hand is clenched. “I haven’t even said her name and you fall apart.” He shakes his head, still studying me. He’s standing in the middle of my room, hands in his pockets, smiling at me like he might be disgusted. “She is more to you than just an experiment, isn’t she?” he says. “What,” he says, “is your fascination with that girl?” My spine goes rigid. “How can you stand to look at yourself, knowing that you’ve been disabled by your own subordinates?” I pause outside the adjoining door to my office. ![]() “What’s it like,” he asks, “to be so crippled?” He’s smiling. “So if you’ll excuse me, I have other matters to contend with.” ![]() “The orders have been issued,” I tell him without looking in his direction. ![]() He’s waiting for me when I return to my room. ![]()

Going postal discworld5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() They were all cleverly constructed and very interesting. I liked the secondary characters a lot too. He was just my type of a main character, crooked and wicked, but motivated to achieve more aware of his flaws, morally ambiguous, willing to take a wild chance Attempting to do the impossible, because where is the challenge, otherwise? I found Moist mightily gratifying to read about. The struggle against the easy way out, which is to just take what you want (and not even need), as opposed to struggling and fighting for what’s worth it. Moist, as a character, is a personification of the efforts to be good. It was a good way of getting poorer really very quickly, and staying poor. ![]() “And this was known as the greatest of treasures, which is Hope. Whatever else is happening in this book, it’s actually a wide frame of the story of hope. Going Postal is essentially a book about hope. Which was my reason to postpone reading this book after I suffered from a severe Terry Pratchett fatigue. I saw the Going Postal movie no fewer than 3 years ago and I loved it. ![]() After that, the list gets blurrier, but nevertheless, Going Postal is among best. That is to say, Equal Rites will ALWAYS be my favourite, as it was my first, and the one that got me into Terry Pratchett to begin with. ![]() Going Postal definitely ranks among my top 3 Discworld books. ( Author: Terry Pratchett) + ( Year: 2004) + ( Goodreads) ![]()
